Australian Citizenship

Australian citizenship is more than a legal status. It is a milestone that recognises your journey, your contributions, and your connection to Australia. We know this step often comes after years of dedication and hard work, and we are here to guide you through the process with care, clarity, and support.

Why Become an Australian Citizen?

As an Australian citizen, you will enjoy:

  • Full rights and responsibilities under Australian law

  • The right to vote in federal, state, and local elections

  • Access to an Australian passport and consular support when overseas

  • Travel freely in and out of Australia with the Australian passport

  • Eligibility for certain government jobs and programs

  • The ability to pass citizenship to your children born overseas

Pathways to Australian Citizenship

1. Citizenship by Conferral - For permanent residents who meet the residence, character, and other eligibility requirements. This is the most common pathway for individuals who have made Australia their home.

2. Citizenship by Descent - For individuals born outside Australia to an Australian citizen parent. Confirms citizenship based on parentage.

3. Citizenship by Adoption - For children adopted under Australian law or through a recognised overseas adoption. Grants Australian citizenship to eligible adopted children.

4. Citizenship for Children - For children under 16 who do not qualify by descent or birth but have a parent who is an Australian citizen.

5. Citizenship by Resumption - For former Australian citizens who voluntarily renounced their citizenship and now wish to regain it.

Basic Eligibility Requirements (Citizenship by Conferral)

While requirements may vary based on individual circumstances, most permanent residents applying by conferral will need to:

  • Be a permanent resident at the time of application

  • Have lived in Australia for at least 4 years, including the most recent 12 months as a permanent resident

  • Have spent no more than 12 months outside Australia in the past 4 years, and no more than 90 days in the past 12 months

  • Meet the character requirements

  • Intend to maintain a close and continuing connection to Australia

  • Pass the citizenship test

Exemptions may apply to the residence and citizenship test requirements.
