Differences Between Subclass 189, 190, and 491 visas

1. The Subclass 189 visa is for skilled workers to apply independently without requiring nomination. Applicants are assessed based on their skills and points score. This visa grants permanent residency, allowing holders and their family members to live and work anywhere in Australia. It offers maximum flexibility as there are no regional or location restrictions.

Additionally, there are specific streams available under this visa for New Zealand citizens, Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport holders.

2. The Subclass 190 visa requires nomination by an Australian state or territory government. To apply, you must submit an EOI and receive an invitation based on your points score, which is increased by 5 points through the nomination. Successful applicants are generally expected to live and work in the nominating state or territory for at least two years. This visa grants permanent residency and is suitable for those willing to contribute to the economy of a specific region.

3. Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa

The Subclass 491 visa is a provisional visa valid for five years, designed to encourage skilled migration to regional and low-population growth areas. Applicants must be nominated by a state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated regional area which are defined by postcodes of the areas. If you receive a nomination, your points score is increased by 15 points. This visa requires living, working, and studying in specified regional locations. After meeting residence and work requirements for at least three years, visa holders may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the Subclass 191 visa.

*Applicants can submit multiple EOIs for different visas; however, each state and territory has its own rules for this process, along with specific requirements for occupation, employment, English proficiency, and other factors. These rules can change annually, so it is important to stay informed and review the latest criteria before applying.
