Who is this visa for? 

 

The Subclass 461 visa is designed for partners, dependent children, and certain other family members of New Zealand citizens who hold or are eligible for the Special Category (Subclass 444) visa. It is specifically for those who are not New Zealand or Australian citizens themselves and want to join their New Zealand citizen family in Australia.

What does the Subclass 461 visa allow you to do? 

 

  • Live in Australia for 5 years from the date of visa grant 

  • Work and study anywhere in Australia during your stay 

  • Travel freely in and out of Australia while your visa is valid 

  • Apply for further Subclass 461 visas if you continue to meet the eligibility criteria

Basic eligibility requirements

​

To qualify for this visa, you must: 

  • Be a member of the family unit of a member of the family unit of a New Zealand citizen who holds or is eligible for a Subclass 444 visa 

  • Not be an Australian or New Zealand citizen yourself 

  • Hold a substantive visa (excluding a Subclass 403 Temporary Work visa) or apply from outside Australia 

  • Meet the health and character requirements 

  • Not have any outstanding debts to the Australian Government

Who counts as a family member?

 

Eligible family members include: 

  • Spouse or de facto partner of the New Zealand citizen 

  • Children / dependent children of the New Zealand citizen

Costs

​

​​As of the current fees set by the Department of Home Affairs:

​

  • The main visa application charge is AUD 445.00

  • For secondary applicants, such as dependent child, the fee is AUD 225.00 for those aged 18 and over, and AUD 110.00 for those under 18.

​

All amounts are subject to change. 

​

Further costs may include health examinations required by the Department of Home Affairs to meet health criteria, as well as police clearance certificates from any country where you have lived for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. If your documents are not in English, official translation and certification may also be necessary. In addition, our professional fees may apply, which vary depending on the complexity of your case and the level of support you require throughout the process.
